For Teachers and Admins
This guide describes how to add Vocareum to a Canvas course once your organization's root-level Canvas-to-Vocareum integration is already in place. It covers the four Canvas placements where Vocareum can appear, how to map a Canvas assignment to a Vocareum assignment so grades post back to the Canvas gradebook, and how to give students Course Navigation access to Vocareum without setting up grade passback.
Use this guide when you are ready to surface Vocareum inside a specific Canvas course, whether you need per-assignment grade passback or a single Course Navigation link to all assignments in Vocareum.
Prerequisites
Before beginning, confirm the following:
The root-level Canvas-to-Vocareum Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3 integration is already installed and available in your Canvas account. If it is not, an admin must complete that setup first; refer to Setting Up LTI 1.3 for Canvas.
LTI 1.3 is enabled in your Vocareum course. Refer to Configure LTI 1.3 in Your Course.
You have the Canvas instructor role (or higher) in the target Canvas course, and instructor access to the corresponding Vocareum course.
Understanding the placements
Placements determine where Vocareum appears within Canvas for users. The JSON URL install pre-configures all four placements listed below.
Only the Assignment Selection placement supports automatic grade passback to the Canvas gradebook. The other placements are best suited to ungraded Vocareum content.
Assignment Selection
Adds Vocareum as an external tool that can be selected when creating or editing a Canvas assignment. This placement is required for any assignment that needs to send grades back to Canvas, since it is the only placement that supports automatic grade passback to the Canvas gradebook. For the full mapping procedure, refer to the "Mapping assignments for grade passback" section below.
Link Selection
Enables Vocareum content to be added as an item within a Canvas module. To add a Vocareum lab or course to a module, open Modules in Canvas, click the + button on the module, choose External Tool from the dropdown, and select Vocareum. The lab appears as a clickable link within the module.
Editor Button
Adds a button to the Content Editor toolbar in Canvas, available when creating or editing pages, assignments, discussion posts, and similar content. Selecting this button opens a Vocareum window where instructors can choose and embed a Vocareum lab into the content area, either as an iframe or in a new tab.
Course Navigation
Adds a Vocareum link to the left-hand course navigation menu in Canvas, giving students direct access to their Vocareum course from anywhere within the Canvas course. This placement pairs well with the Show All Assignments option in Vocareum's LTI Settings, described in the "Enabling Vocareum Course Navigation without grade passback" section below.
Mapping assignments for grade passback
If assignments are linked correctly between Canvas and Vocareum, the Canvas gradebook is automatically populated with grades from Vocareum assignments. Each Vocareum assignment must be mapped to a corresponding Canvas assignment via the Assignment Selection placement.
Follow these steps to map a Canvas assignment to its Vocareum counterpart.
In Canvas, open the assignment for editing and set Submission Type to External Tool.
Use Find to choose the Vocareum assignment, or paste the LTI link from the corresponding Vocareum assignment. Vocareum assignment LTI links are listed on the Vocareum course's Edit Assignments page.
Save the Canvas assignment. Grades submitted in Vocareum for that assignment will now post to the Canvas gradebook.
Enabling Vocareum Course Navigation without grade passback
If you do not need grade passback or a one-to-one mapping between Vocareum assignments and Canvas assignments, students can navigate through assignments directly inside Vocareum from the Canvas course navigation link.
Follow these steps to configure Course Navigation without grade passback.
In each Vocareum assignment, turn off the per-assignment LTI option and save the assignment.
In the Vocareum course, open Course Settings, then LTI Settings, and enable Show All Assignments.
Students will then be able to access every assignment from the Vocareum link in Canvas's course navigation, and no grades will be passed back from Vocareum to Canvas.
