For Teachers and Admins

This article is a settings reference for Vocareum courses that have LTI 1.3 enabled. It defines what each course-level and assignment-level setting does and when to use it. For background on what LTI 1.3 enables and how the integration works overall, refer to What Is LTI 1.3 Integration with Vocareum?

Settings summary

The table below lists every LTI 1.3 setting documented in this article. The sections that follow define each setting and when to enable or disable it.

Setting

Scope

Summary

Show All Assignments

Course

Controls whether students launched from a Learning Management System (LMS) link see only the launched assignment or the full list of published assignments in the Vocareum course.

Auto Create Sections

Course

Automatically creates a Vocareum section per launching LMS course, based on the Student Information System (SIS) ID of the LMS course.

Send Total Score (Canvas)

Course

Canvas-only. Sends the raw point total to the LMS gradebook instead of a normalized score between 0.0 and 1.0.

LTI checkbox

Assignment

Controls whether the assignment can be launched through LTI.

Course-level settings

The settings in this section apply to the entire Vocareum course. They appear alongside the LTI 1.3 toggle in the course's LTI settings.

Show All Assignments

Controls what students see after launching into Vocareum from an LMS link.

  • When OFF (the default), Vocareum displays only the assignment the student clicked on in the LMS. The launched window opens directly to that single assignment.

  • When ON, students can navigate from the launched Vocareum window to any other published assignment in the same Vocareum course.

When to enable or disable:

  • Leave OFF for the standard per-assignment launch flow, where each Vocareum assignment is added to the LMS as its own link or deep-linked item. This is the flow described in the per-LMS Vocareum setup guides, such as Adding Vocareum to a Canvas Course, and is the configuration required for per-assignment grade passback to work cleanly.

  • Turn ON when you want a single LMS link to serve as the entry point to the entire Vocareum course. This does not affect grade passback for assignments already mapped individually.

Auto Create Sections

Automatically creates a Vocareum section for each LMS course that launches into this Vocareum course. When a student arrives through LTI, Vocareum reads the lis_course_offering_sourcedid parameter, which carries the SIS ID of the launching LMS course, and places the student in a Vocareum section matching that SIS ID. The section is created on first launch if it does not already exist.

This setting is OFF by default.

When to enable or disable:

  • Turn ON when one Vocareum course backs multiple LMS course shells, such as multiple sections of the same class taught from a shared Vocareum course, and you want each LMS section's roster isolated in its own Vocareum section without manual setup.

  • Leave OFF when only one LMS course launches into this Vocareum course, or when you prefer to manage Vocareum sections manually.

Send Total Score (Canvas)

Canvas-specific. This setting changes the score format Vocareum sends back to the LMS gradebook through LTI Assignment and Grade Services.

  • When OFF (the default), Vocareum sends a normalized score between 0.0 and 1.0, which Canvas multiplies by the assignment's point value to produce the final grade.

  • When ON, Vocareum sends the raw point total directly, bypassing the normalization step.

When to enable or disable:

  • Turn ON if your Canvas assignments are configured to expect a raw total rather than a percentage, for example when assignment point values in Canvas mirror the Vocareum assignment's point total exactly and you want the score to pass through unchanged.

  • Leave OFF if your Canvas gradebook displays percentages or normalized scores, which is the standard Canvas configuration.

This is the only setting in this article that is specific to one LMS. For other LMSs, Vocareum always sends a normalized score regardless of this setting's value.

Assignment-level settings

The setting in this section applies to a single Vocareum assignment and is configured on that assignment's settings page.

LTI checkbox

All assignments in an LTI 1.3 enabled Vocareum course are accessible through LTI by default. Unchecking the LTI checkbox on an individual assignment's settings page removes that assignment from LTI access.

When to enable or disable:

  • Leave the LTI checkbox checked for any assignment you want students to reach through an LMS link or through the deep-linking picker.

  • Uncheck the LTI checkbox for any assignment you do not want exposed through LTI, such as draft or staging assignments still in development, solutions or answer-key assignments intended only for instructor view, and assignments retained for archival purposes.

Where to find these settings

The course-level settings live on the Vocareum course's settings page, under LTI Settings. This is the same panel where the LTI 1.3 toggle itself is enabled.

The assignment-level LTI checkbox lives on the individual assignment's settings page.

For the step-by-step procedure of opening these panels and toggling the settings, refer to Configure LTI 1.3 in Your Course.
